Quick Summary
If you love a good mix of political intrigue, magic, and slow-burn romance, The Serpent and the Wolf delivers. Vaasa Kozár isn’t about to sit back and play the obedient wife when she’s forced into an arranged marriage with Reid of Mireh. On their wedding night, she seduces him, ties him to the bed, holds a dagger to his throat... and runs. (Talk about an iconic first impression.)
But Vaasa’s plans to escape are quickly derailed when she realizes she needs Reid’s help just as much as he needs hers. With a deadly magic awakening inside her and Reid in the middle of a political battle for power, the two strike a deal: she helps him win an election, and he helps her control her dangerous abilities. As they work together, their playful, reluctant partnership turns into something deeper—because of course it does.
What I Loved
Vaasa Is a Force – She’s smart, strong-willed, and determined to carve out her own destiny. Watching her navigate her newfound powers while also dealing with political scheming was super satisfying.
Reid Is Surprisingly Soft?? – He’s introduced as this merciless ruler, but honestly? He falls first, and he falls hard. His clever one-liners and secret softness had me hooked.
Fake Dating With Real Chemistry – Their relationship is chef’s kiss. The tension, the banter, the slow realization that maybe they actually like each other? Loved every second of it.
A Well-Built World – The political stakes felt real, and I appreciated how the world-building unfolded naturally without feeling like an exposition dump.
What Didn’t Quite Work for Me
The Pacing Was a Bit Off – The book starts out with a bang (literally), but then slows down in the middle before picking back up toward the end. I found myself wishing the momentum had been steadier throughout.
Magic System Could Have Used More Depth – The magic elements were intriguing, but I wanted more details. Hopefully, the next book in the series expands on this!
Who Should Read This?
If you're into fantasy romances with high-stakes political drama, strong female leads, and slow-burn relationships with plenty of tension, this one's for you. It’s got just enough intrigue, magic, and swoon-worthy moments to keep you turning the pages.
Final Thoughts
The Serpent and the Wolf was a super enjoyable read, even if it didn’t quite hit the full romantasy vibe I was hoping for. The ending? Let’s just say I’m already desperate for the next book. If you love fantasy with a side of will-they-won’t-they, this one is worth picking up!
